war of words, two lawmakers get personal over the debt debate as a new bipartisan plan begins to take shape. humble pie, rupert murdoch is grilled on his role in the phone hacking scandal after a protester makes a headline grabbing attack. and no parking, a canadian car owner learns the hard way to pay attention to the sign. captioning funded by cbs good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. this morning the debt showdown in washington is focused on a bipartisan senate plan that is gaining legs on capitol hill and the white house. the proposal from the so-called gang of six calls for deep

budget cuts and new revenues. joel brown is in washington with the latest on this. good morning, joel. >> betty, good morning. in this week's long battle over raising the debt limit, optimism has been hard to come by. that seemed to change yesterday, at least in the senate. we saw some republicans, some democrats, some conservatives, some liberals, coalescing around a bipartisan deal. >> it's time to get down to the business of actually solving this problem and i think we now are seeing the potential for a bipartisan consensus. >> reporter: president obama may invite congressional leaders back to the white house, now that there's a new bipartisan plan on the table, a group of senators known as the gang of six unveiled the proposal tuesday. it trims about $4 trillion from the deficit over the next decade, with $500 billion cut immediately. the proposal also includes new tax revenues and cuts to medicare and medicaid. the plan stands a better chance in a tea party backed measure in the house. >> the bill is passed.

>> reporter: lawmakers rammed that one through last night but both the president and senate vow to shoot it down. the gang of six plan is gaining support in the senate, several republicans say they think it could pass, with a majority of 60 or 70 votes. >> there's just so many things about this plan that are going to make sense to fiscal talks and i'm one of them. >> reporter: but the proposal still faces hurdles in the house. some democrats oppose cuts to medicare and medicaid while many republicans dislike planned tax hikes. >> we need to get something in place by august 2nd. we know default is not an option. >> reporter: with the clock winding down, a last ditch deal is still in the works. it would allow president obama to raise the debt limit on his own. on the senate floor yesterday majority leader reid announced that he and other congressional leaders were heading back into white house negotiations later today but at this point no official talks, betty, are on the schedule. >> joel brown in washington this morning, thank you, joel. the debate over that house passed budget plan sparked an

online outburst from the freshman congressman congressman. during remarks on the floor debbie wasserman schultz questioned allen west after he left the chamber. west responded with an unusually personal e-mail, wrote west "you are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the house of representatives. if you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise shut the heck up." in an e-mail reply a spokesman for wasserman schultz says west is upset because the congresswoman highlighted that west was "trying to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, children and the middle class." we'll continue to follow that. republican presidential candidate michele bachmann confirmed she suffers from headaches but denied they leave her unable to perform her work. "the daily caller" reported they

can incapacitate her for days. backman says that's not true. >> i'm prescribed medication and i take it on occasion whenever symptoms arise. they keep my migraines on control. i'd like to be abundantly clear. my ability to function effectively will not affect my ability to serve as commander in chief. >> a just released poll indicates backman is running neck and neck with mitt romney in the race for the republican presidential nomination. and the driver who is allegedly responsible for a deadly wreck in upstate new york has been arrested for driving while intoxicated and negligent homicide. police say he passed a slow moving tractor and sideswiped a van full of amish farmers. five passengers in the van were killed in yesterday's crash, ten others injured. four members of a family were killed by a flash flood in wyoming. the colorado family was camping when torrential rains started to fall.

officials say they drove on to a washed out section of a highway and were swept away. the mother and three daughters died. the father survived. yosemite national park a desperate search for a missing hiker resume. witnesses say they saw one or more hikers falling over a 300 foot waterfall yesterday. officials say at least eight people have died in the park this year. overseas it is reported the last serbian war crimes fugitive is under ared. hadzic was the leader of the rebel serbs and on the run for eight years. after the capture of mladic last year, he was the last remaining figure sought by the u.n. war crimes tribunal. today british prime minister david cameron will be questioned by members of parliament. yesterday rupert murdoch, his son and former chief executive were questioned during testimony. yesterday he was attacked by a protester with a foam pie. check it out. murdoch refused though during

all of this to accept responsibility and said his only fault was trusting the wrong people. charlie d'agata is in london with more details on this. good morning, charlie. >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. british newspapers couldn't resist the headlines after the murdoch pie incident yesterday. today the prime minister will not be eating pie. humble, foam, cream or otherwise, but the opposition will be handing out plenty of criticism. it's british prime minister david cameron's turn in the firing line. lawmakers will grill cameron over his relationship with top executives at rupert murdoch's "news of the world." they're especially interested in his decision to hire andy coulson as his communications chief. police arrested coulson in connection with the newspaper's phone hacking scandal. cameron's also close to news international's ceo rebecca brooks. >> he is a neighbor, a friend, but i deemed the relationship to be wholly appropriate. >> reporter: in her own

interrogation, tuesday brooks admitted something went wrong at the tabloid and described allegations of hacking into murder victims phones as pretty horrific. the prime minister had to cut short a trip to africa for this emergency meeting at parliament to stand the growing criticism about his relationship with the murdoch empire. >> that you have had frequent meetings with prime ministers in your career. in the period after the arrest -- >> i would say leave me alone. >> reporter: during three hours of testimony murdoch apologized for the role "news of the world" employees allegedly played in tapping the voice mails but the media mogul said he's not responsible for what he called the fiasco over the hacking. >> who is responsible? >> the people i trusted to run it and then maybe the people they trusted. >> reporter: murdoch says he has no plans to step down from his multibillion-dollar global empire. this is the most serious political crisis of the prime

googled the word chloroform 80 times. prosecutors used that to argue she was planning her daughter casey's murder. yesterday bradley said he made a mistake and the google search was only used once. he says he told prosecutors about the error but they did not correct it. major nadal hasan will be arraigned today in the shooting case. hasan faces 13 counts of murder for the attack in 2009, if convicted he could face the death penalty. on the "cbs moneywatch," apple is up and so is the calorie count at fast food restaurants, great. ashley morrison is here in new york with the latest on that. >> good morning, betty. asian markets you were up today. tokyo's nikkei rose 1% while hong kong's hang seng fell just a fraction. today wall street gets a new data on home sales and another round of corporate earnings on tuesday. the dow made its best day of the

year, the blue chips jumped 202 points while the nasdaq gained 61. after the closing bell apple roerpd blockbuster earnings, beating even the best expectations. third quarter earnings more than doubled and revenue jumped 82%. the company says it sold a stunning 20.3 million iphones in that period. apple stock jumped 5% on that news. american airlines is planning for the future, they're expected to announce today plans to upgrade their fleet and order as many as 400 new fuel-efficient planes, from both bowing and airbus. it could cost over $20 billion. this comes as the company is expected to post a net loss of about $235 million, and possibly sell off its american eagle subsidiary. going green is going to cost you a little bit extra at least for the nissan leaf. the automaker is raising the price for the electric car by $2,500 to just over $35,000. nissan says it's adding features

that calls itself anonymous. they are charged with cyber attacks on paypal, visa and master card. armand keteyian has more. >> reporter: dozens of fbi agents targeted members of a loose knit hacking group. sigh mull tainious raids driven by the u.s. attorneys office in san jose, california. agents hit six homes in new york along locations across the country, seizing hard drives and computer accessories. according to the government the arrests were based on a cyber attack by anonymous against paypal, had suspended an account tied to the website wikileaks, cutting off online donations. the group has taken credit for hacking websites of the cia in the city of orlando, after police arrested people for handing out sandwiches to the homeless without a permit. this man calls himself commander x and says he's part of anonymous and orchestrated the orlando project. he asked us to hide his

identity. >> the power of anonymous is that we have the ability to affect change on the internet. you have a site online, all of the sudden we snap our fingers and that site is gone. >> reporter: their method of choice, a denial of service attack where hackers overwhelm websites with a huge volume of requests for information, crashing the sites, says commander x, for a cause. >> that process is the equivalent of a virtual sit-in. it's no different really than taking up seats at the woolworth's lunch counter during the '50s, during the civil rights movement in the '50s and '60s. >> reporter: 16 people tied to the attacks were arrested tuesday but sources say they're not leaders in the group but rather people who volunteered to help in the attacks. armand keteyian cbs news, new york. this morning on "the early show" an insiders view of the british hacking scandal from a journalist who used to work for murdoch. i'm betty nguyen. this is the "cbs morning news." h.

the the four-month-long nfl lockout could end this week. the players' leadership met this week in washington, they could take a vote today. the owners might vote on thursday. the agreement could include $1 billion in benefits to retired players who have serious health problems. john blackstone reports. >> i've had nine brain surgeries -- >> reporter: for two seasons george visger gave everything he had to the nfl until his playing career was cut short by a major concussion and brain surgery. >> major headaches every night, prong isle vomiting, a ball of light in each eye. >> reporter: visger was one of 6,000 former players left on the

sidelines as owners and the players association negotiate a players contract. two years in the nfl what do you get? >> nothing. >> reporter: no pension? >> nothing. >> reporter: you're not vested? >> no, very few guys are and even those that are vested draw next to nothing. >> reporter: to collect benefits, players must have been in the league for four years but just half the 13,000 retired players are eligible for pension and disability coverage, although visger was on the san francisco 49ers team that won the super bowl in 1982 he had to battle the team for five years to cover his medical expenses for nine surgeries. >> they opened me up back here, there's a tube goes down the side of my neck. >> reporter: brain damage left him with severe short term memory loss, he uses note pads to write down almost every minute of his life. >> these are my days. >> reporter: because the next day you might not remember what you did. >> sometimes the end of the day. >> reporter: representatives of former players like visger joined the nfl contract

negotiations to try to expand the coverage to more retirees. >> it don't make sense to not take care of the people who took care of you in the game. >> reporter: former defensive tackle gordon wright has been waiting 30 years for an nfl pension. he and his wife struggle to pay medical bills. >> i'm angry with them because they won't accept the fact that they owe him. >> wright grew up with john mackey, who died earlier this month from dementia. he fears brain damage suffered on the field will shorten his life, too. >> some guys i grew up with, even the tough guys. >> we're not asking for anything other than what we've earned. >> george visger now spends an hour or so almost every day in a hyperbaric chamber breathing oxygen, but he's still waiting for help from the game that put him here. john blackstone, cbs, sacramento.
